1.

See Instill at the 'Iguana' Egham

Instill

Instill at The Iguana, Egham, Thursday Feb 14th 2008 8:30PM

Pop/rock

Touring with those southern-comfort addled kerosene brothers otherwise known as Hayseed Dixie this springtime, local boys INSTILL (see them with the Dixie boys in LONDON on 19th April - Shepherds Bush Empire) play jumped-up hi-energy rock with plenty of pizzazz and zing.

As a live show they are unbeatable and have already supported the likes of InMe, Skindred and Thunder. Polished and capable, their flavoursome mix of funk and rock has a nice English eccentric tinge and is hugely accessible.

Actually they are quite posh-boys (it must be those Surrey and Hampshire accents) but the electric fuzz and the explosive push of Andy and Phil’s guitars are accentuated by the fulsome deep baritone vocal style of Hodge (similar to Eddie Vedder but with a blacker edge) and punched and scrambled by Alan on drums.

Instill song topics tend to concentrate on matters of social concern but they are exquisitely lightened by a sharp sense of British humour.

Sophisticated beats, a crackling vocal display and exciting riffs and melodies will see Instill become commercially successful and internationally recognised before the year is out- mark my words!

See these local heroes now before they go large…

Go to see thriller 'Sleuth' at Beck Theatre, Hayes

Sleuth

Sleuth at The Beck Theatre, Hayes from 11th to 16th Feb at 7.30PM

Sleuth

Sleuth is set in a Wiltshire manor house belonging to Andrew Wyke who is, himself, a successful mystery writer.

The home reflects Wyke’s obsession with the inventions and deceptions of fiction and his fascination with games and game-playing. He lures his wife’s lover, Tindle, into the house and convinces him to stage a robbery of her jewelry, a proposal that sets off a chain of events that leaves the audience trying to decipher where Wyke’s imagination ends and reality begins.

Written by Tony-award winning British playwrite Anthony Shaffer in 1970 and later transferred into a successful film directed by Kenneth Branagh (starring Michael Caine) in 2007, this new production stars Simon MacCorkindale, best known for his role as Consultant Harry Harper in Casualty. Joining him on stage is film and television star Michael Praed, who is well remembered as the original Robin of Sherwood, and whose roles on American television include Dynasty and The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne.

Alive with nail biting anticipation this psychological thriller promises to baffle even the most proficient sleuth!

Tony McPhee at Windsor

Tony McPhee

Saturday, 01 December 2007 08:00pm-10:30pm Windsor Arts Centre £10

They backed John Lee Hooker and Champion Jack Dupree on their 1960s tours of Britain and they supported the Rolling Stones in 1971, at the personal request of Mick Jagger. They were personal friends of Memphis Slim, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Champion Jack Dupree. They made three top-ten albums.

But who the hell were the Groundhogs?

The Groundhogs were a British1960s and1970s high-energy blues rock band built on the solid foundations of authentic, heavy and loud blues guitar and vocals provided by Tony McPhee. The original line-up included McPhee with bassist Peter Cruickshank , and Ken Pustelnik on drums. The sound was sometimes augmented by Steve Rye on harmonica.

After years of performing, and recording, McPhee left the band in 2004 in order to perform acoustically leaving fellow original members Cruickshank and Pustelnik to continue as The Groundhogs Rhythm Section.  But earlier this year McPhee has started a new band (Tony McPhee's Groundhogs), with ex-Hawkwind Dave Anderson on bass and Marco Anderson on drums.

On Saturday 1st December at 8PM you can enjoy an evening with Tony McPhee at Windsor Arts Centre. The set is a vibrant mix of acoustic and electric styles, solo and duets with his partner Joanna Deacon, interspersed with anecdotes and chat.

Staines Chav Test

·  Have you ever been on a Thursday night bender in the Litten Tree, Cheekees or Wetherspoons?

·  Do you regularly shop at Elizabeth Duke, Argos?

·  Do you gob or spit gum on the pavement outside Debenhams?

·  Do you think it would be fun to paint mustard moustaches (nicked from KFC) onto the lino men outside Baroosh?

·  Do you regularly deposit Waitrose shopping trolleys in the three rivers? (The actual three rivers- not the shopping centre answering to that name.)

·  Do you buy your burberry cap and hoody from Staines market?

·  Do you believe you can get some ‘cool stuff' from the pound shop?

·  Do you prefer to hear your ‘music' from a mobile phone whilst seated on a bench in the car park?

·  Do you feel the need to shout - as loudly as possible- a string of profanities across the entire Elmsleigh Centre of a Saturday afternoon?

·  Do you think that the best thing about Staines is its proximity to Thorpe Park (and you know how to get in, via a hole in the fence) ?

·  Do you think a ‘really wicked' Saturday evening can be spent in Martin's Heron?  (Or even Datchet come to that...)

·  Is your accent/language a blend of cockney slang / Eastenders / Los Angeles street gangs even though you have lived all your life in Middlesex?

·  Do you hope that, one day, you might get a job at Kwik-Fit or Argos and you might get to live in a flat in Stanwell?

·  Have you already got 3 bin-lids (kids) with one on the way, even though you are only 15?

If you answer mostly YES- then you are probably lying.... because it is a known fact that chavs don't read and they certainly don't use the computer!

Why not add your own?  For more info / facts / articles check out AdPontes-Staines

Rupert Gough, conductor, presents "An English Serenade"

Vaughan Williams: Serenade to Music
Elgar: Serenade
Mozart: Ave verum corpus K618
Joby Talbot: Ave verum corpus
Berkeley: Serenade
Tarik O'Regan: Tritych

Windsor Buildings, 7.30pm

In music, a serenade (or sometimes serenata) is, in its most general sense, a musical composition, and/or performance, in someone's honour.

Joby Talbot (born August 25, 1971) is a British composer. Born in Wimbledon, London, Talbot initially studied composition at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College under Robert Saxton.

Talbot was a member of the renowned Altair Club while attending King's_College_Junior_School.

In 1993 Talbot first met Neil Hannon and began arranging and performing with his group The Divine Comedy. One of their tracks, "In Pursuit of Happiness", was used as the theme music for BBC TV's Tomorrow's World.

Other works for television written by Talbot include the theme music for Young Musician of the Year, and the music for the highly successful BBC 2 comedy series The League of Gentlemen, which was awarded the Golden Rose at the Montreux International TV Festival.

During 2004, Talbot was Classic FM's first resident composer. Talbot wrote a new piece of music, scored for up to five instruments, each month for the year of his residence. These pieces have also been premiered and playlisted on Classic FM. The twelve compositions form part of a larger piece, released on a CD entitled Once Around the Sun on May 23, 2005.

Talbot wrote the original music for the film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as music for the film The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse.

Swan Upping at Staines

Swan Upping- The Seigneur of the Swans

Swan Upping dates back from medieval times, when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans at a time when swans were considered an important food source for banquets and feasts. Today, the Crown retains the right to ownership of all unmarked Mute swans in open water, but the Queen ( Seigneur of the Swans) only exercises her ownership on certain stretches of the River Thames and its surrounding tributaries. This includes the Staines part of the Thames from Sunbury (the traditional start of the ‘upping'- although in 2007 the event started at Walton-on-Thames). The ownership of the swans is shared with the Vintners' and Dyers' Companies, who were both granted rights of ownership by the Crown in the fifteenth century. Nowadays, the swans are counted and marked, but rarely eaten except perhaps occasionally at State Banquets.

The Queen's Swan Marker and Swan Uppers, accompanied by the Swan Uppers of the Vinters' and Dyers' livery companies use six traditional Thames rowing skiffs in their five day journey upstream as far as Abingdon. By tradition, scarlet uniforms are worn by The Queen's Swan Marker and Swan Uppers, and each boat flies their appropriate flags and pennants. One boat (the royal skiff) flies the sovereigns pennant.

Apart from Swan Upping, the Queen's Swan Marker has other duties: he
advises local organisations throughout the country on swan welfare and incidents involving swans, he monitors the health of local swan populations, and he
briefs fishing and boating organisations on how to work with existing wildlife and maintain existing natural habitats. It recent months this job had become more difficult because of the fear of ‘bird flu'. He works closely with swan rescue organisations (see Swan Sanctuary link below) and carries out the rescue of sick and injured swans when relevant, and coordinates the removal of swans from stretches of the river Thames used for summer rowing regattas.

At one time any unauthorised person found guilty of killing a swan could be sentenced to transportation for seven years and even in 1895 could receive seven
years hard labour.

The Swan Upping event normally takes place during the third week of July.
