With the sudden closure of Sticky Fungus just four weeks after its faltering opening (and let’s not forget that the whole project was on/off on/off on/off more times than a professional stroboscopic light show at a Hawkwind concert in downtown Vegas) together with the total collapse of the Phoenix as a venue, along with the complete dogs dinner at the Dog & Partridge (the latest owners apparently left in quite a hurry ... without leaving a gig diary) and it would be easy to assume that the live music scene in Staines is looking shakier than Shakin’ Stevens standing on a lilo in the North Sea.

But that good ole musical equivalent of a soup-kitchen- The Hob (Hobgoblin, Staines) - is still going strong (thanks to the sheer dedication and hard work of those nice folks BUCKLE UP) every Sunday and Thursday (ACE & GRAVITY IS DEAD are on JUNE 7th entry £3) and don’t overlook the Staines Riverside Club. Yes, yes, it may look like your nan’s front living room and have the same atmosphere as a fun-night in at a retirement home in Eastbourne, but they have hosted some magnificent acts there over the years ... none more exciting than this week’s headliners - BRAINSCAPE - Friday 5th June entry £3...

And just a few stops down the line at Windsor & Eton riverside you have got the thriving Old Ticket Hall venue - almost on your doorstep. (Jun 12 2009 they host ALOUD OUT for all you Killers and Kaiser Chiefs fans out there)... not to mention The Firestation Arts Centre a short walk down the hill from the riverside station (20th June sees Post War Years + MidiMidis + Vienna Ditto all in their Basement Studio entry £5.) If you have the cash left, you could take a mini-cab to the ROYAL OAK HAMPTON ( Friday 12th June - Smileys Heros - or Saturday 13th June - Netherworld .)

Or pop along to The Barley Mow, Shepperton - a really comfortable pub - who are hosting a classic rock night with local favourites BandX on Saturday 6th June. We at ADPONTES really hope that Sticky’s can get up and running again (soon) and , if and when they do, we will support them as much as possible .... but in the meantime DON’T GIVE UP on STAINES ....
The summer season of Ignition! Starts with a bang.. Following the release of new single 'Closure' and recent headline slots at Alan McGee's Death Disco and Club Velocity, The November Five are a band on the up and they bring their driving, infectious indie pop to The Firestation's May Ignition!

Band portrait of November Five'Closure' has already received enthusiastic support and airplay from DJs such as Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music, 'Band of the Month' feature on www.Koolrockradio.com and 'You Heard It Here First' on the Britsound Radio Show, nationally syndicated across the USA. If that wasn't enough, online music bible The Quietus recently jumped on board with an interview that takes in everything from the bands sounds to Glenn Close's haircut! Read it here.

With performances all over the world, he’s twice been requested to perform by personal invitation of HM the Queen, opened for Robbie Williams at The Royal Albert Hall, not to mention private appearances for the likes of Richard
Branson, Elle McPherson and a personal invitation to perform at Paul McCartney’s wedding. Other performances include sets with BBC Symphony Orchestra live in Hyde Park, The Proms, and a superb show backed by a 35 piece orchestra
alongside Katie Melua and Will Young at the BBC's VE Day Concert in Trafalgar Square. Further TV appearences include This Morning, Top Of The Pops, BBC News and Stritcly Come Dancing. Ray has just released a brand new album, 'Salute to
the Great Entertainers', in which he pays tribute to his some of his musical heroes. Recently Ray and the Giants enjoyed two sold out weeks at Ronnie Scotts. Gelato being a keen chef has also written a cookbook, entitled 'Cookin' with Ray'.

The Raging Horns (oooh matron!) is a fantastic six-piece horn section, four great singers and a magnificent rhythm section, playing classic soul, funk and pop covers with a raw energy guaranteed to get everyone up on their feet. For over a decade, The Raging Horns have brought the house down at weddings, parties, special events and corporate functions right across the UK. The band’s mix of enthusiasm, youth and professionalism continues to leave audiences pounding their feet and screaming for more.

Here is their Funk Manifesto:

What We Do
It’s simple - we entertain, and we’re very, very good at it.
There’s really nothing quite like having brilliant musicians on stage playing songs you somehow know every single word to and we do this with an energy and style that’ll leave you breathless.

Why?
Because we love doing it. For us, nothing matches the excitement of having an audience in the palm of our hands – the sheer thrill of performing live is what we enjoy and what we’re all about.

Who We Are
We’ve been performing right across the UK for over a decade and having started young, have established a unique mix of youth and experience.
Great musical skill combined with varied backgrounds in professional careers leave us with all the right tools to deliver an evening to remember.

What We Play
Classic soul, funk and pop are what we love and that’s what we play. From Tom Jones to Robbie Williams, there’s genuinely something for everyone.

THE VELVET HEARTS were born in 2007. Frustrated with the industry, the band started posting live performances of their gigs on the website YouTube. These videos achieved phenomenal success, notching up 300,000 hits in just six weeks,
gathering more subscribers than megastars Gwen Stefani and Gorillaz.

Their unique style, killer hooks and emotive lyrics are a result of Newman and Jones’ songwriting partnership, a journey that began in the music room in their early school days. The ballsy rock edged sound of The Hearts certainly pays homage to rootsy rock’n’roll, but they are more than just a blues-rock band, their songs are stooped in emotion and offer the listener something more than your token ‘rock band’.

Grammy award winning producer Mark Pastoria stumbled across the band on YouTube and word of The Velvet Hearts spread to his studio in Motown. Only a few weeks later The Velvet Hearts flew to Detroit and recorded their debut album ’Into The World’.
Kicking off supporting Saxon and Wishbone Ash in front of a crowd of 4000, they played at venues from Plymouth to Aberdeen and back again. Classic Rock is the best music on the planet. Period.

RIFF RAFF show it due respect with a no-nonsense delivery that tells it like it is - straight ahead rock from the classic power trio format, superbly played. They pay tribute to (but don’t copy) some of the best known (and some less obvious) rock tunes. With former pro credentials and years of experience working throughout Europe and elsewhere, in diverse acts, RIFF RAFF really know what they are doing - telling the story of rock, from its sixties beginnings, through the "classic" glory years, and up to the nineties.

If you enjoy Led Zeppelin, Free, Wishbone Ash, Cream and their contemporaries, you’re going to love RIFF RAFF.

Audio.Video.Disco. are a new breath of fresh air to the indie, pop genre, not afraid of writing catchy melodies and annoyingly difficult to pigeon-hole, they are a cut-above the norm.

Formed mid-way through 2007 when duo Matt O'Daly and Richard Berkshire moved away from their acoustic roots and decided to start a proper band. In stepped Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums). The line-up was complete.

Now having already played alongside Alphabeat, a set at the illustrious Clapham Grand and a headline show at the Astoria 2, this band have already attracted the attention of producer/engineer Phil English. The band recorded their current EP at
Phil's Alexander Sound Studio in Milton Keynes.

Their EP launch was a huge sell out success and the band sold more tickets than when Hard-Fi played the same venue. Now with a solid fan base built up over the past year the band are set to make some serious waves amongst the current crop of bands coming out of the West-London area.

With former pro credentials and years of experience working throughout Europe and elsewhere, in diverse acts, RIFF RAFF really know what they are doing - telling the story of rock, from its sixties beginnings, through the “classic” glory years, and up to the nineties.

Formed mid-way through 2007 when duo Matt O’Daly and Richard Berkshire moved away from their acoustic roots and decided to start a proper band.

The band recorded their current EP at
Phil’s Alexander Sound Studio in Milton Keynes.

Their EP launch was a huge sell out success and the band sold more tickets than when Hard-Fi played the same venue. Now with a solid fan base built up over the past year the band are set to make some serious waves amongst the current crop of bands coming out of the West-London area.

Albany Down can be counted on for pleasure and honest to goodness fun. Here is what ADPONTES had to say about this great band last time they came into town:

The sound of Albany Down is stripped-down-to-the-waist no nonsense rhythm and blues 70’s inspired Brit rock ( the feel of early ‘Free‘ or ‘John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers‘) but with a bit of jazz-funk to mix it up a little...very fine and accomplished performance...insistent guitar hooks, stripped down licks and rattling good-time rock...
Ascot

West London’s Soul Disciples came together late in 2005 with the express wish of bringing the classic soul sounds of the 60’s & 70’s to the dance floors of Britain.

Dismayed at the disservice these great tunes are being paid by many covers bands, we have resolved to make our interpretations as faithful to
the spirit of the originals as possible.

The soulful voice of Miss Clare "Bubbles" Moloney combined with the authentic soul sound of the SD band has to be witnessed to be believed.

The Soul Disciples constantly strive to instill their performances with the spirit and skill which made soul music of the 60’s & 70’s so exciting.

The SD’s have found themselves in the enviable position of having an 8-piece line-up which combines experience, virtuosity, personality & good looks ...
All wrapped up with a shared love of Classic Motown, Atlantic, Stax & Northern Soul.
With THE DAQUIRIS

Albany Down can be counted on for pleasure and honest to goodness fun. Here is what ADPONTES had to say about this great band last time they came into town:

The sound of Albany Down is stripped-down-to-the-waist no nonsense rhythm and blues 70’s inspired Brit rock ( the feel of early ‘Free‘ or ‘John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers‘) but with a bit of jazz-funk to mix it up a little…very fine and accomplished performance…insistent guitar hooks, stripped down licks and rattling good-time rock…

Dismayed at the disservice these great tunes are being paid by many covers bands, we have resolved to make our interpretations as faithful to
the spirit of the originals as possible.

The soulful voice of Miss Clare “Bubbles” Moloney combined with the authentic soul sound of the SD band has to be witnessed to be believed.

The Soul Disciples constantly strive to instill their performances with the spirit and skill which made soul music of the 60’s & 70’s so exciting.

The SD’s have found themselves in the enviable position of having an 8-piece line-up which combines experience, virtuosity, personality & good looks …
All wrapped up with a shared love of Classic Motown, Atlantic, Stax & Northern Soul.

Kamikaze Test Pilots

Thursday 12 March 2009 Hobgoblin Staines

Oh kudzoka kutamba !

You get the feeling that the music of the KTP did not start out as a vision, but that the sounds gradually emerged, like grubs from pupae after a long dead summer. You get the sense that the music only evolved once that stifling long sessile period had reached a natural end and once the arid ideas and dead-end formulas had been tested, retested, drained and dried. Consequently the birth of the new sound, the emergence, is a warm and finely crafted creation … and well worth the wait.

Zimbabwe born brothers ‘Beans’ and ‘Wes’ formed the band back in 2005 with Martin on bass. Jim Davies (ex Loki) was a later UK addition to the outfit with his flying V lead guitar, dreads swishing and flipping in the air, and cosmic energy pulsing through his vital sinews like a rampaging torrent. Like the name of the band, the band members are a contradiction unto themselves … the diversifying contribution from each musician creating a stylistically unique tapestry of sounds and experiences.

Most of the KTP songs start out as simple riffs played upon fibrous frets. The sounds are then built up, layer-on-layer, with generous funky chord backdrops and feverish jazzy drum accompaniments, ultimately reaching satisfying plateaus of finely produced rock and blues. The two gung-ho heroes- Beans and Wes- have a good old time smashing and thrashing. Beans provides the formidably heavy metal vocals (actually Ozzie-esque in both size and quality) and Wes pounds out those drums.

Under all that flamboyant thrashing and swirling, Jim seems tougher and more focused than the brothers, but no less intriguing. Martin is the quiet man of the band, with his black porkpie hat and dark beard, beady eyes flicking left and right. He produces a succession of thrumming bass lines and lively rumbles. Very pluckin’ good.

At the start of the gig the early sounds of KTP reminded me of Second-Coming age ‘Stone Roses’ with that heavy bluesey-rock sound predominating, interlaced with subtle jazz-funk touches. But later in the show I was reminded more of ‘System’ when the sounds developed a progressive metal edge… strange time sigs, thematic links, unorthodox sound patterns etc. Tribal rhythms and stoner rock sounds are fused with complex metal guitar-work and harmonies to become complete backdrops onto which the boys can add their richly enjoyable Africans chants.

These boys write their own songs (credits also to Gavin Creedy) and go down a storm with their (mainly) student following in Berkshire UK. The funky beats and, at times, almost jazzy licks, added to those jump blues syncopated rhythms and a ‘twin lead guitar’ approach to the breaks, mean that this band is very reminiscent of old school classic rock. Large portions of solid noise (man, this band is noisome) and spot-on harmonies add to the overall texture and quality.

I particularly appreciated a heavy and almost instrumental track ‘Kumusha’ with its insistent hooks, possibly influenced by the likes of Black Label Society and, I would even guess, Iron Maiden. It is a fine rock song with plenty of false starts, vague whaleback dwalas and promises a-plenty reminding the listener of SOAD…but with additional vocal arrangements in the Bantu language, Shona, this song a classic-rock delight.

You can pick up the Kamikaze Test Pilots new six-song EP “Into The Sun” at their gigs or off their space. Go out to see them SOON in venues around the Reading area.

With ABSTRACT GENIUS

KamikazeTest Pilots mostly come from a country called Zimbabwe which is why they have the funny accents, although they have been living in the UK for near on a decade, so the accents are funnier still.

Ryan (aka Beans) plucked up the courage to ask his grandfather, a 6 foot plus ex-cop, if he could have a set of ancient jazz drums to fulfill a dream thought up during the long and hot african summers. His request granted, he set off forming a band with his younger brother Wes. It was soon obvious that Wes had a natural gift for the drums, so Ryan picked up the guitar, learned a few chords and slowly progressed to writing songs. They took their "band" to the boarding school they went to and it was then they met Martin.

Martin started on 6 strings, learning the very few licks and chords that Beans knew and with a revolving door of bassists, a band was born. However, turmoil created within Zimbabwe forced all matters of music to be put aside and for us to take stock of what options were available to us. We decided that it was time to spread our wings.

Kamikaze Test Pilots was eventually formed in 2005 by Beans and Wes. There were a number of member changes, with Martin joining the band as bassist in January 2006. The last of the changes happened in January 2008 when the band were joined by Jim Davies (ex-Loki) on guitar. To date we have enjoyed local radio and internet radio airplay, have self released a six track EP ("Into The Sun"-BUY IT NOW!) and are constantly gigging some bar somewhere. . .

They took their “band” to the boarding school they went to and it was then they met Martin.

To date we have enjoyed local radio and internet radio airplay, have self released a six track EP (“Into The Sun”-BUY IT NOW!) and are constantly gigging some bar somewhere. . .

After a long time of thinking of a new name (better) No Lip was born out of Sux Pastilles. With more shows upcoming No Lip are looking for fans to come to shows and go back 30 years to when punk was great. Doing covers from Ramones to The Damned and more obscure ones like the Wasps and Wire with a healthy smattering of Clash,Pistols and Ruts
